Always verify before you send. VA fax numbers and mailing addresses change and can vary by benefit type. Every number on this page was checked against official VA sources (see the source notes below), but it may still be outdated by the time you read this — confirm on va.gov before faxing, especially for time-sensitive claims. What Can You Fax to the VA Claims Intake Center?

The Claims Intake Center in Janesville, Wisconsin is the VA's central intake point for paper disability compensation submissions. Documents that arrive there — by fax or mail — are scanned into the veteran's electronic claims file. It handles:

  • Disability compensation claims — for example VA Form 21-526EZ, if you choose not to file online at VA.gov.
  • Supporting evidence — private medical records, nexus letters, lay/witness statements (VA Form 21-10210), and buddy statements.
  • Evidence submissions with VA Form 20-10208 — the "Document Evidence Submission" form. Its own instructions say it is "used for the submission of additional documentation or evidence" and route it to the Evidence Intake Center at the same PO Box 4444, Janesville, WI 53547-4444.
  • Other completed VA benefit forms related to a compensation claim, when the form instructions point to the Claims/Evidence Intake Center.

Not sure which VA form your situation needs? The VA form library at va.gov/vaforms lists every current form — each form's instructions state where it should be sent, and that instruction always wins over any directory page (including this one).

Before You Fax: The VA Prefers Uploads

The VA has been moving intake to its own digital tools, and they are worth trying first:

QuickSubmit (via AccessVA)

VA News announced that "QuickSubmit has replaced Direct Upload as the online tool to share documents with VA's Evidence Intake Center." Veterans, family members, and representatives can use it after signing in through AccessVA, and it keeps a record of your uploads.

Claim status tool (pending claims)

If you are waiting on a decision, VA.gov lets you upload evidence through the claim status tool for up to one year from the date the VA received your claim.

File the claim itself online

New disability claims can be filed end-to-end at va.gov/disability/how-to-file-claim — no paper at all.

So When Does Faxing Make Sense?

  • You are helping a veteran who can't complete the AccessVA / ID.me sign-in process, or the portal is down close to a deadline.
  • You want an independent, timestamped transmission confirmation for your own records in addition to whatever the VA logs.
  • A VA letter or form instruction specifically asks you to fax documents to the Claims Intake Center.
  • You are sending from a clinic, VSO office, or law practice whose workflow is already fax-based.

How to Fax the VA (and Not Lose Pages)

1

Start with a cover sheet

Include the veteran's full name, VA file number (or SSN), your contact details, and a total page count. Grab a free template from our fax cover sheet library.

2

Label every page

Write the veteran's name and file number on each page. Intake centers scan thousands of pages a day — labels keep yours together if the batch is split.

3

Send to 844-531-7818 and keep the confirmation

With FaxFlow you can send from your phone and save the delivery confirmation with a timestamp — useful if you ever need to show when evidence was submitted.

VA Fax Number FAQ

  • What is the VA fax number for disability claims?

    plus

The VA Claims Intake Center's toll-free fax is 844-531-7818 for claimants inside the U.S. Claimants outside the U.S. use 248-524-4260. Both numbers are published on the VA's compensation mailing-addresses page at benefits.va.gov — verify there before sending, because numbers can change.

  • Can I file a VA disability claim by fax?

    plus

Yes. The VA accepts disability compensation claims and supporting evidence by fax to the Claims Intake Center (844-531-7818), by mail to PO Box 4444, Janesville, WI 53547-4444, or online at VA.gov. The VA increasingly steers submissions to its digital tools, so consider filing online if you can.

  • What documents can I fax to the VA Claims Intake Center?

    plus

Disability compensation claims (such as VA Form 21-526EZ), supporting evidence like medical records and lay statements, and other completed VA forms. For standalone evidence submissions, VA Form 20-10208 (Document Evidence Submission) is the form the VA designed to accompany your documents.

  • What is VA QuickSubmit and should I use it instead of faxing?

    plus

QuickSubmit is the VA's online upload tool — it replaced Direct Upload as the way to share documents with the VA's Evidence Intake Center, and it's available to veterans, family members, and representatives through AccessVA. If you're comfortable with the sign-in process it's the fastest route; faxing remains a solid fallback when you can't access the portal or want a transmission record.

  • What should I put on the documents I fax to the VA?

    plus

Use a cover sheet with the veteran's full name, VA file number (or Social Security number), and a page count — and add the veteran's name and file number to each page so your documents can be matched to the right claim if pages get separated.

  • Where do I mail VA claim documents instead of faxing?

    plus

Mail to: Department of Veterans Affairs, Claims Intake Center, PO Box 4444, Janesville, WI 53547-4444. Faxing or uploading reaches the VA the same day, while mail spends days in transit.
