FEMA Fax Number: Where to Fax Disaster Assistance Documents (2026)

Appeals, receipts, repair estimates, and other Individuals & Households Program documents all go through one FEMA fax line — but FEMA would rather you upload, and your appeal clock is only 60 days.

!

Verify before you fax anything. Agency fax numbers change, and the number in your own FEMA decision letter always takes priority over any directory — including this page, which could be outdated or incorrect despite our checks. Confirm on fema.gov or in your decision letter first. FaxFlow is not affiliated with FEMA.

FEMA — Individuals & Households Program fax

800-827-8112

Attention line: "FEMA — Individuals & Households Program"

Three Ways to Send Documents to FEMA

FEMA fact sheets list these submission channels for Individuals & Households Program documents. Upload is listed first for a reason — but all three are valid.

1

Upload (fastest)

Log in to your disaster assistance account at DisasterAssistance.gov and upload appeal letters and supporting documents directly to your file. Use "Check Status" to sign in or create an account.

2

Fax: 800-827-8112

Same-day delivery with a transmission record you keep. Address it to "FEMA — Individuals & Households Program" and label every page with your disaster and application numbers (details below).

3

Mail

FEMA
P.O. Box 10055
Hyattsville, MD 20782-8055
Mail takes days in transit — risky near the 60-day appeal deadline.

You can also hand documents in at a Disaster Recovery Center — find open locations through FEMA's DRC locator at fema.gov.

The 60-Day Appeal Window

If you disagree with a FEMA decision or award amount, you have the right to appeal — but FEMA's appeal fact sheets are explicit: "Appeals must be submitted within 60 days of the date on the FEMA decision letter." That is the letter's printed date, not the day it arrived in your mailbox.

Your decision letter explains which documents can support an appeal for that type of assistance, and it includes an Appeal Request Form you can send back. A signed written appeal letter works too. Supporting documents FEMA lists include:

  • Receipts
  • Bills
  • Repair estimates
  • Property titles or deeds

…plus any other information that supports the reasons for your appeal. Decision timelines on appeals vary — track yours in your DisasterAssistance.gov account or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.

Before You Fax: The Every-Page Rule

FEMA processes documents for hundreds of thousands of survivors per disaster. Unlabeled pages are how appeals go missing. FEMA asks that everything you send include:

Disaster Number and FEMA Application Number — written on all pages

Both numbers are on your FEMA decision letter. This is the single most important labeling step.

Your full name, current phone number and address

As they appear on your FEMA application, so records match.

The address of the disaster-damaged home

Even if you are staying somewhere else right now.

Business name and contact info on receipts, bills, and estimates

FEMA uses these to confirm the figures you submit.

Faxing? Put the Appeal Request Form from your decision letter first, or start with a fax cover sheet showing your name, both FEMA numbers, and a page count.

FEMA Fax Number FAQ

What is FEMA's fax number for disaster assistance documents?

FEMA's fax line for Individuals & Households Program documents — including appeals and supporting documentation — is 800-827-8112. Address the fax to "FEMA - Individuals & Households Program" and confirm the number in your FEMA decision letter or on fema.gov before sending, because it can change.

How long do I have to appeal a FEMA decision?

FEMA fact sheets state that appeals must be submitted within 60 days of the date on your FEMA decision letter. The clock runs from the letter date, not the day you received it, so send your appeal as early as you can — faxing or uploading reaches FEMA the same day.

What do I write on every page I send to FEMA?

FEMA asks that documents include your Disaster Number and FEMA Application Number written on all pages, plus your full name, current phone number and address, and the address of the disaster-damaged home. Receipts, bills, and estimates should show the business name and contact information.

Can I upload documents to FEMA instead of faxing?

Yes. FEMA lists uploading to your disaster assistance account at DisasterAssistance.gov as the first way to send documents. If you already have an account, uploading is usually the fastest path; faxing to 800-827-8112 is the main alternative when the portal is unavailable or you want a transmission record.

Where do I mail FEMA appeal documents?

Mail appeal letters and supporting documents to: FEMA, P.O. Box 10055, Hyattsville, MD 20782-8055. Remember that mailed appeals still have to meet the 60-day window, so allow for transit time — or fax/upload instead.

Do I need a cover sheet when I fax FEMA?

Use the Appeal Request Form or cover sheet included with your FEMA decision letter as the first page when you have it — it pre-routes your fax to the right program. If you don't have it, a standard fax cover sheet listing your name, disaster number, application number, and page count works.

fema.gov and DisasterAssistance.gov block automated access, so this page was verified against FEMA's own guidance as republished on multiple official government sites, all fetched live on July 15, 2026:

  • FEMA Fact Sheet "How to Appeal a FEMA Decision" (DR-4778-NE / DR-4779-IA, June 2024), hosted at iowa.gov — states "Fax to 1-800-827-8112", the Hyattsville P.O. Box 10055 address, the 60-day rule, and the every-page labeling list.
  • North Carolina dac.nc.gov release — "Fax the form to 800-827-8112", same mailing address, and the DisasterAssistance.gov upload path.
  • FEMA's current appeals page on fema.gov lists the same fax number — check it (or your decision letter) for the latest.
